A Choir Replaced 'Jesus' With 'Hillary' in Campaign Rally Song

September 8, 2015

A women's chorus called Voices from the Heart replaced the name "Jesus" with "Hillary" at a campaign rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Saturday.

The chorus was singing the old gospel song "Woke Up This Morning (With My Mind On Jesus)," but chose to replace Jesus' name with Hillary's.

The video shows the choir singing,

Woke up this mornin’ with my mind, stayin’ on Hillary
Woke up this mornin’ with my mind, stayin’ on Hillary
Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah!

A description for the chorus said that it "sings a rich mix of soulful music from many cultural and musical traditions. Women of all ages and all walks of life attend weekly rehearsals at South Church in downtown Portsmouth." A Facebook post published by the group shows that the Clinton campaign invited the group specifically but did not mention any specific song requests.

Clinton grew up attending First United Methodist Church in Park Ridge, Illinois, and said her grandmother, who "traced her Methodism to the Wesley brothers themselves," sang hymns to her when she was a child.

She has not said whether she sings hymns to her own granddaughter. With her Methodist roots, countless options to insert her name in Wesleyan hymns exist, to include "[Hillary], Whose Glory Fills The Skies," "[Hillary], The Name High Over All," and "Rejoice, [Hillary] is [Queen]."

This is not the first musical tribute to Clinton—it joins the ranks of country smash "Stand Up With Hillary."
