Belgian counterterrorism officials are investigating the stabbing of two police officers in Brussels on Wednesday morning as a possible terrorist attack.

Brussels prosecutors said in a statement the case had been handed over to federal officials, who typically step in during incidents relating to organized crime or terrorism, Reuters reported.

The assailant stabbed one officer in the neck and another in the stomach in the city’s Schaerbeek neighborhood, which has links to Islamic State jihadists who helped plan the recent attacks in Paris and Brussels. The attacker, identified as Belgian Hicham D., 43, then broke the nose of a third policeman before he was shot in the leg.

The federal prosecutor’s spokesman, Eric Van Der Sypt, said investigators "have reason to believe that it is terror-related," according to the Guardian.

Belgium remains on high alert following the March bombings at Brussels Airport and the Maelbeek subway station that killed 32 people.
