Sen. Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) offered Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner's proposal on the fiscal cliff as an amendment to a bill on the Russian trade bill being debated on the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon.
"Last week Secretary Geithner brought up a proposal that was so unserious," McConnell said, "I would like to see if my Democratic friends would like to support it."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) accused McConnell of trying to pull a "political stunt."
McConnell's efforts to give the Senate an opportunity to vote on Geithner's proposal, which he described as "so unserious it makes me wonder what the point of it was" and includes $1.6 trillion in new taxes, failed, but McConnell suggested he would be willing for the proposal to be voted on as an amendment to the Senate's next bill or as a stand alone bill.
