MSNBC's Joe Scarborough compared some members of the media to screaming fans of the Beatles while talking about the attention North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un's sister has received at the Olympics in South Korea.
Scarborough was talking to Richard Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, about the media's reaction to Kim Yo Jong's trip to South Korea for the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
"Other than certain members of the national media treating the North Koreans arriving in South Korea much like the press and screaming teenage girls treated the Beatles landing at JFK fifty years ago, 53 years ago, it was bizarre," Scarborough said.
Many in the media have been criticized for their glowing coverage of Kim Yo Jong and the North Korean delegation, ignoring or whitewashing the country's horrendous record on human rights.
The right-leaning Media Research Center compiled some of the tweets sent out by major media outlets praising dictator Kim Jong Un's sister as well as headlines about her and the country's red-clad cheerleaders.
CNN has a story titled, "North Korea is winning the Olympics -- and it's not because of sports," the Washington Post compared Kim Yo Jong to Ivanka Trump saying, "The ‘Ivanka Trump of North Korea’ captivates people in the South at the Olympics," and the New York Times said "Kim Jong-un’s Sister Turns on the Charm, Taking Pence’s Spotlight."
"Morning Joe" co-host Willie Geist was also among those unimpressed with the media's coverage of the North Koreans.
I can report South Koreans here in Pyeongchang are not as enthralled with Kim Yo Jong and the North Korean cheerleaders as it seems some media are back home.
Something about N.K. killing, starving, & imprisoning its people while threatening South Korea with nuclear annihilation.
