Americans by a margin of two to one oppose President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Trump announced Thursday that the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord, and according to the survey, 59 percent are against Trump's decision to withdraw, while just 28 percent support the move.

The deal was created in December 2015 as an agreement between 195 countries to further efforts to limit the effects of human-induced global warming on the planet. Trump claimed that the deal put unfair standards in place threatening the American economy.

In the same poll, 42 percent of citizens said they believed America's exit from the Paris climate deal would hurt the U.S. economy. Voters also indicated that the decision would hurt U.S. leadership in the world and hinder international efforts to address climate change.

Republicans generally support America's exit from the climate agreement with 67 percent support, according to the poll, while Democrats widely oppose it with 82 percent in opposition. Only 22 percent of independents supported Trump's move.
