The Washington Post recently received a $500,000 grant from the liberal Ford Foundation, according to a Romenesko report.
The report includes the memo sent to Washington Post employees, which says that the grant "will be used to fund four new newsroom positions to work on special projects related to money, politics and government."
The grant will last for one year, with an agreement in principle for another two years. It is part of an initiative by the Ford Foundation "aimed at promoting journalism in the public interest." The memo notes that this initiative, called the Freedom of Expression program, has given money to other liberal media outlets, including ProPublica, NPR, and the Los Angeles Times.
Since 2009, the Ford Foundation has donated large sums of money to notable liberal organizations, such as the Center for American Progress (CAP), which received at least $5,984,600, $1.2 million of that in 2012 alone.
