Warren Pounces on Biden: He 'Was On the Side of the Credit Card Companies'

April 26, 2019

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) took a shot at former vice president and fellow Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Thursday, saying he was "on the side of the credit card companies" while she stood up for hard-working families.

"At a time when the biggest financial institutions in this country were trying to put the squeeze on millions of hard-working families, there was nobody to stand up for them. I got in that fight because they just didn't have anyone. And Joe Biden was on the side of the credit card companies," Warren said.

Warren and Biden have feuded in the past over bankruptcy laws.

In a 2002 op-ed, Warren criticized Biden for supporting a bankruptcy bill she thought would have negative consequences for women.

"Do politicians like Mr. Biden who support the bankruptcy bill believe they can give credit-card companies the right to elbow out women and children so long as they rally behind an issue like abortion?" Warren wrote. "The message is unmistakable: On an economic issue that attracts millions of dollars of industry support, women have no real political importance."

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) also jabbed Biden in a fundraising email on Thursday.

"It's a big day in the Democratic primary and we're hoping to end it strong. Not with a fundraiser in the home of a corporate lobbyist, but with an overwhelming number of individual donations in response to today's news. Contribute before midnight. It would mean A LOT to our campaign," the email read.

Biden attended a fundraiser on Thursday hosted by Comcast executive David Cohen.

Biden entered the 2020 presidential race on Thursday. His announcement prompted opposition from Justice Democrats, which tweeted, "we can't let a so-called ‘centrist' like Joe Biden divide the Democratic Party and turn it into the party of 'No, we can't.'"
