Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) in an interview published Tuesday would not say whether she would support Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) if he ran in 2020 and she chose not to.
Warren, a potential 2020 presidential hopeful, caught flack during the 2016 Democratic primaries for not backing the more progressive Sanders and only being a vocal participant once Hillary Clinton was established as the party's nominee.
Warren demurred during an interview with Cenk Uygur of left-leaning web commentary series "The Young Turks" when he asked whether or not she would back Bernie in a 2020 primary.
"If you don't run, do you think this time around that you will have a more forceful opinion in the primaries?" Uygur asked. "Because that is when people will decide who our standard bearer is."
"If for example," he continued, "Bernie Sanders were to run again, if you're not running, would you support him?"
Warren wouldn't answer directly, but said she didn't know what the future held.
"You know, I don't know where we'll be in 2020. It's a long time off," she said.
"I supported and helped Bernie long before I ever thought I'd be in politics," Warren continued. "I used to go up to do town halls with Bernie to talk about what was happening to working families. I used to call in on Bernie's—when he had a radio show for a period of time."
"But I don't know where we'll be in 2020. I don't think Bernie knows where we'll be in 2020. So I don't know what Bernie's gonna do, and I don't want to be in a position to push Bernie to do anything," she said, reiterating that she wouldn't commit one way or the other.
Warren then pivoted to talking about issues unrelated to the 2020 election, discussing healthcare and education.
