Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell (Calif.) said Friday on MSNBC that Democrats should "relish" their role as "America's bouncer," letting in "good ideas" while keeping bad ones out through their votes in Congress.
"Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough asked Swalwell about the apparent bipartisan "peace" that Congress has recently experienced, as President Donald Trump works with Democrats to pass legislation on immigration.
"Peace appears to be breaking out on the Senate floor and perhaps coming to a House chamber near you soon," Scarborough said. "What you've seen the last two weeks, Donald Trump talking to Democrats, working with Democrats, is that good for the country?"
"It's good for the country; it's our job, Joe," Swalwell responded.
Swalwell said that if a deal can be reached to help Dreamers, illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, then it should be made, no matter who strikes the agreement. He also said that he sees the Democratic Party as "America's bouncer" at this time.
"Right now we've got leverage behind us and the energy of the American people," Swalwell said. "I see us, right now, as America's bouncer. We're going to let the good ideas in and we have the votes in Congress to keep the bad ones out, and we should relish that role."
