Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke says he is unsure if the Trump administration will continue with plans to place him in the Department of Homeland Security after allegations of plagiarism have surfaced.
Clarke's comments came during a pre-taped interview with Joe Pags that aired Monday, according to CNN.
The reports of plagiarism came from a CNN investigation into Clarke's 2013 Master's thesis on American security. The report found 47 separate instances where his attribution of outside information was improper.
Clarke told Pags that the report was an attempt to weaken his relationship with the Trump administration.
"This is about weakening, like I said, the support that I give and that I have with President Donald Trump and Secretary Kelly. It's to weaken their resolve to hang in there with me," Clarke said. "Will it be successful? It might, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over that."
Clarke was then directly asked if the Trump administration would be revoking the appointment.
"Who knows? I say that sincerely, because I'm in a political environment, sometimes political decisions are made, President Donald Trump has to do what's in the best interest of his administration," he said.
