House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R., La.) was discharged from MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

Scalise was shot in the hip on June 14 by a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) at a baseball field in Alexandria, Va. while practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game with other Republican lawmakers. Four others were wounded, including two Capitol Hill police officers.

The hospital announced Scalise's release in a statement on Wednesday, the Hill reports.

"Congressman Steve Scalise has made excellent progress in his recovery from a life-threatening gunshot wound six weeks ago," the statement said. "Yesterday, he was discharged from MedStar Washington Hospital Center and is now beginning a period of intensive inpatient rehabilitation."

Scalise was placed in intensive care in serious condition after the bullet tore through muscles, bones, and internal organs. His release was delayed to treat a subsequent infection.
