Pence: Mitt Romney Under 'Active Consideration' to Be Secretary of State

November 20, 2016

Vice President-elect Mike Pence confirmed on Sunday that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is under "active and serious consideration" to serve as secretary of state in a Donald Trump administration.

Pence appeared on several Sunday morning shows when he made the declaration.

"I can say that Governor Romney is under active and serious consideration to serve as secretary of state of the United States," Pence told Face the Nation host John Dickerson Sunday morning.

Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, met with Trump on Saturday at the president-elect's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Romney and Trump appear to have had a cordial and substantive meeting, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Some advisers have encouraged Mr. Trump to consider Mr. Romney as secretary of state. Saturday's meeting could have been a pivotal step toward that end.

Cupping his hands to his mouth, Mr. Trump shouted to reporters following the meeting, saying "it went great," as Mr. Romney was approaching the press. It remains unclear, however, whether their meeting was a one-off discussion or part of a broader courtship that could bring Mr. Romney into the Trump administration.

Many Republicans leveled attacks at Mr. Trump during the presidential campaign, including Mr. Romney, who at one point called the real estate billionaire a "con man" and a "fraud."

Pence also spoke highly of the Trump transition process as the president-elect also held meetings on Saturday with Gen. James Mattis, former D.C. schools chief Michelle Rhee, and conservative community development leader Robert L. Woodson Sr.

"To be sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with our president-elect as he's talking to men and women of extraordinary backgrounds and capabilities, putting this administration together," Pence said of his weekend with Trump. "Building the agenda, being there when he's talking to leaders around the world has been deeply inspiring."
