House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is not a "political issue" for Democrats.
"It isn't for us a political issue. It isn't something that we fan the flame of. We just want them to have the investigation so the integrity of the court is upheld and the respect for the woman making the allegations is there, and that should be in every case," Pelosi told reporters at a press conference on Friday.
"For us, it's so much bigger than politics or elections," Pelosi continued. "It's about America and who we are, and it's about women coming forward."
She said Democrats want "integrity on the Supreme Court" and "a justice who will uphold the Constitution of the United States.
Asked if she thought President Donald Trump is trying to "break" the #MeToo movement, Pelosi responded, "Yes, I do." She then compared Kavanaugh's testimony on Thursday to Trump's disposition.
"I think yesterday, with the lack of temperament and lack of dignity in his presentation, that Judge Kavanaugh was doing an imitation of President Trump," she said.
Pelosi also called the use of a female prosecutor by Republican senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee "an act of complete cowardice," and she said she wanted due process followed.
"I believe in due process," Pelosi said. "Somebody makes a charge against you, there should be due process and that's all people are asking for."
Sen. Mazie Hirono (D., Hawaii) appeared to suggest on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday that Kavanaugh does not get the presumption of innocence because of his "ideological agenda," citing his views on abortion.
On Thursday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) hammered Democrats for politicizing Kavanaugh's confirmation.
"If you wanted an FBI investigation, you could have come to us!" Graham shouted. "What you want to do is destroy this guy's life, hold this seat open and hope you win in 2020! You said that, not me!"
