The Indiana Democratic Party is not giving out the phone number for Evan Bayh's campaign headquarters because "they don't have anybody staffing the office right now," the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
In an attempt to contact Bayh's campaign, which was launched on July 12 and lists neither an email address or phone number on its campaign website, the Free Beacon contacted the state party and asked whether the campaign had a phone number.
"Not yet, sorry about that," said an individual at the Indiana Democratic Party who recommended that an email be sent to the generic info@evanbayhforindiana.com address.
Questioned further on how it was possible that the campaign had no phone number, the man clarified.
"They do, but they don't have anybody staffing the office right now," he said. "The campaign is kind of in an all-hands-on-deck mode right now, so there is nobody to check the phones."
"So there is nobody there, and I don't have the number for it," he said.
The Indiana Democratic Party was not alone. Reached separately during attempts to contact the Bayh campaign, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said that it had neither an email address or a phone number for Bayh's campaign.
The only phone number listed on the Bayh's FEC filings is that of Dennis Charles, who is listed as campaign treasurer. The phone number does not connect to the campaign, but rather to Indianapolis accounting firm Charles Madden PC, where Charles works as a CPA.
Bayh has been criticized since his campaign launch for his lack of ties to Indiana. Bayh, a former Indiana governor who then served two terms in the U.S. Senate, went on to work as a lobbyist for McGuireWoods in Washington, D.C., where he also purchased a couple of multi-million dollar homes.
He is categorized as an "inactive voter" by the Indiana Election Division.
It remains unclear whether anybody is checking the campaign's email address. The Free Beacon's Wednesday email to info@evanbayhforindiana.com has yet to receive a response.
