Morning Joe: Paul Had a 'Rough Night,' Was 'Loser' of Debate

August 7, 2015

Morning Joe's panel criticized the debate performance of Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.) Friday, with host Joe Scarborough saying "do most of us agree Rand Paul was the loser last night?"

"I think Rand Paul and Ben Carson just didn't stand out," Bloomberg's Joshua Green said.

Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson said some of Paul's rhetoric about domestic spying drew cheers where he was sitting during the debate.

"Really? I thought he had a rough night," said co-host Mika Brzezinski.

"Otherwise, I thought he had a rough night," Robinson said.

Paul was arguably the most feisty candidate on stage Thursday night in Cleveland. He got into a shouting match with Gov. Chris Christie (R., N.J.) about surveillance and national security, at one point rolling his eyes when Christie invoked memories of 9/11.

Paul even hit Christie for his "big hug" with President Obama in the wake of superstorm Sandy.

Paul also went after Donald Trump for buying politicians and accused him of still supporting single-payer health care. Trump said at the time he wasn't still arguing for it and quipped that Paul "was having a hard time tonight," drawing a roar from the audience.

"Trump just buried him with that aside, though," Green said. "You're having a hard night. Just cut him off at the knees."
