Kaine Says That He's 'Barely Likable'

September 9, 2016

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine joked on Friday evening in Norfolk, Virginia that the secret to his success in politics is that he's a "barely likable" guy.

"If you find that you're just a barely likable enough person, go into politics. You just gotta get 51 percent. That's been the secret to my success," Kaine said. "I'm barely a likable enough guy."

Kaine concluded his speech talking about his undefeated record of winning all eight elections in his political career, but that he did not win by a great margin.

"I tell people all the time I may be 8-0, but I don't win by much. I mean if I'm honest, I'd win by a little, not by a lot. I don't feel like it's fair to ask my friends to pay for a landslide. I mean that would be unfair," Kaine said.

Kaine then offered some advice to young people by saying they should get involved in politics if they believe they are barely likable enough.

Kaine also told the crowd that his motto for campaigning is that he is the underdog until he is the winner.

Over the last week, Kaine and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton have seen their lead in the polls diminish. A recent CNN poll showed Donald Trump leading Clinton by two points.
