Former President Jimmy Carter revealed Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

According to NBC News, Carter explained in a press release that he recently underwent liver surgery during which cancer was discovered throughout his body.

"Recent livery surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," Carter said in the statement Wednesday. "I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare."

Emory is the largest healthcare system in the state of Georgia.

"A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week," Carter added.

Carter, a Democrat, served at the 39th President of the United States.
