Clinton: I Don’t Read the Fine Print

October 3, 2016

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Monday at a rally in Ohio that she does not read the fine print.

Discussing the Wells Fargo scandal where bank employees allegedly opened accounts without customers’ permission, Clinton referred to the "very fine print" that would not allow those being cheated to be compensated in the courts.

"When the scam’s victims, people like you and me who had accounts there, tried to sue, they were shocked to learn there was a provision in the very fine print of their contracts that kept them from going to court to sue the bank for being cheated," she said.

Clinton said corporations like Wells Fargo would not be allowed to use "fine print gotchas" to "escape accountability."

"This is now common practice across a lot of industries," she said. "From nursing homes that mistreat seniors to for-profit colleges that defraud students. You know, who reads all that fine print? I don’t."

However, during a debate during the primary season with former rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), Clinton said people should "read the fine print" about Sanders’ tuition-free college plan.

Clinton also previously told FBI investigators that she did not know the "C" marking in emails meant they were classified when she was secretary of state.
