MSNBC: Clinton Avoided Campaign Event's Rope Line in Wake of FBI Statement

July 5, 2016

Hillary Clinton avoided the rope line at a campaign event in Washington, D.C., MSNBC reported Tuesday, in the wake of a statement from FBI Director James Comey about the investigation into Clinton's private email server.

Although Comey said the FBI would not recommend charges, he said the evidence showed "extremely careless" behavior by her and her colleagues regarding the handling of classified material.

"This clears her of the legal hurdle, but the political one remains," MSNBC's Kasie Hunt said. "What Comey had to say was in many ways a political indictment of her conduct."

Hunt talked about Clinton's speech that was given at the National Education Association (NEA) in Washington. However, she said that Clinton avoided the rope line after this campaign event, a common practice for Clinton in order too interact with supporters after a speech.

Hunt said she tried to get a word in with Clinton after her event but was unsuccessful, as the candidate not only avoided the rope line but also only spoke to people that reporters could not reach.

"I tried to get a word with her about this after the event," she said. "She steered clear of the rope line, talked very briefly to some folks here that reporters couldn't get to. Her top aides are here with her. Huma Abedin, who also of course was tied up in this..."

Hunt said it was "unusual" behavior.

"You can kind of see the campaign trying to digest this, figure out how to respond," she said. "That, as we know, has been the way this campaign approaches things, very kind of methodically, thinking through it before coming out."
