Franken Will Make Appearance With Kathy Griffin Despite Trump Beheading Photo

May 31, 2017

Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.) is still planning to appear at a public event with comedian Kathy Griffin, despite a disturbing image from a photoshoot of Griffin holding a mock version of President Donald Trump's head. Franken said during a CNN appearance Wednesday morning that he would still be appearing with Griffin.

Host Alisyn Camerota asked Franken to respond to Griffin's recent photoshoot, in which she appeared holding a replica of Trump's bloody, severed head. The photo prompted immediate outcry from left and right, including Trump, who tweeted that his children were "having a hard time with this."

Griffin subsequently apologized for the picture, saying that she "went too far."

Camerota pointed out that Franken was supposed to be appearing with Griffin in July. "Can she recover from this?" Camerota asked.

"Well, I think she did the right thing," Franken responded. "I think asking for forgiveness and acknowledging that this was a horrible mistake—and so I think she can."

"And you're still going to appear with her?" Camerota asked.

"Yes," Franken said.

Although Franken is not dropping his support for Griffin, others are. Squatty Potty, which sells toilet attachments, has announced that it is suspending its ad campaign featuring Griffin following the photo.
