Majority of Americans Support 20-Week Abortion Ban

A strong majority of Americans support a ban on abortions occurring after 20 weeks of pregnancy, a poll conducted by the liberal Huffington Post has found.

Most Americans would favor sweeping new national restrictions on abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll. But the poll also shows many Americans remain conflicted in their views on abortion.

By a margin of 59 percent to 30 percent, respondents to the new poll said they would favor a federal law banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The poll comes after the House of Representatives passed a bill that outlaws abortion 20 weeks or later after conception.

The Senate has not taken the bill up yet, although there have been rumors that Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) could be the lead sponsor in the upper chamber.

The poll also comes as the Texas legislature is set to pass a 20-week abortion ban. The debate over the ban drew national attention after a Democratic state legislator filibustered the bill.

The Huffington Post is not known for its favorable coverage of efforts to curtail access to abortion.
