Former Iran negotiator and Hoover Institution Fellow Abe Sofaer said a potential veto of sanctions legislation by President Obama would be a mistake Monday on Fox News.
Sofaer criticized the president for categorically threatening to veto any additional bills pertaining to Iranian sanctions. The current iteration before the Senate would levy further punitive measures only if Iran failed to comply with the terms of the Geneva agreement. Reports emerged last week the legislation has a veto proof 67 votes in the Senate.
The former Iran negotiator said bolstering the American negotiating position through the threat of additional sanctions should not be dismissed by the White House. "I hope the president reads what comes to his desk. For him to say that he's going to veto anything related to sanctions is a mistake," Sofaer said.
"If Congress gives him something reasonable, that says for example: 'If Iran is found to have not complied with the joint statement, the joint agreement, or with any of its commitments, then the following sanctions will be imposed.' I think that kind of a law can't be faulted."
