Dem. Senator Calls For ‘Much More Serious’ Sanctions Against Russia

Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy called for more sanctions against Russia Friday, saying the United States should impose "much more serious" sanctions on Russian banks and petrochemical companies.

Murphy, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs, expressed his frustration at Europe for its seeming reluctance to follow the United States on crippling sanctions against the Russian regime.

"It’s just so frustrating for us because it should matter much more to Europe, frankly," Murphy said.

"Five years from now who knows who is next?" Murphy continued. "If Europe doesn’t get serious about this today, right now, and the message is sent to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin that he can go anywhere without consequences it could be a NATO ally who’s next in line."
