Former FBI Director James Comey has declined an invitation to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee during a closed session scheduled for Tuesday.
Committee aides confirmed Comey's decision not to appear before the Senate panel, according to Politico.
One aide to the committee's chairman, Republican Sen. Richard Burr (N.C.), also confirmed to the Associated Press that the former FBI director declined to testify.
The committee had invited Comey to appear at a closed hearing to learn more about President Donald Trump's unexpected decision to fire him on Tuesday.
The Senate panel is currently conducting an investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election and alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.
The FBI is also investigating Moscow's role in the election.
