CNN: Kay Hagan In 'Hot Water' After Admitting She Skipped ISIS Hearing To Attend Fundraiser

Sen. Kay Hagan (D., N.C.) finally admitted Tuesday that she skipped an classified Senate hearing on the Islamic State last month to attend a Democratic fundraiser.

During a Senate debate with Republican opponent Thom Tillis, Hagan admitted she skipped a classified hearing on the rising threat of the Islamic State in September. Hagan initially said she missed the hearing because she was attending another hearing, but as the Washington Free Beacon’s Brent Scher reported, Hagan was actually at a fundraiser in New York City.

CNN Chief National Correspondent John King questioned if Hagan’s confession would significantly impact her campaign in the final weeks before the election.

"The staff was trying to suggest for some time that she was at another hearing," King said. "Does this hurt her credibility?"

Josh Kraushaar, political editor for the National Journal, suggested voters would use the confession as a source of anger against the incumbent Democrat.

While members of Congress often miss hearings and votes, "at a time when [voters] are angry at Washington…it could make a significant difference."

Recent polls show Hagan leading by one point.
