White House Press Secretary Jay Carney indicated he was unsure if biological weapons would be included in a potential Syrian chemical weapons agreement with Russia Wednesday in the White House press conference.
Carney, replying to ABC's Jonathan Karl, suggested the question would be better posed to "experts who are negotiating this, perhaps the State Department or others":
KARL: And then just one last technical question: Should this agreement also include Assad turning over his biological weapons?
CARNEY: You know, I'll have to defer that to the experts who are negotiating this, perhaps the State Department or others, the team that's going with Secretary Kerry. You know, what is obviously directly of concern here was the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime. But I think that's a question that's worth following up on.
Syria has not ratified either the Chemical Weapons Convention or the Biological Weapons Convention.
The question as to whether Assad would be required to turn over biological and chemical weapons adds to the list of challenges for Secretary of State John Kerry in his upcoming negotiations with Russia.
