The Canadian military has been test-driving a $620,000 stealth snowmobile for use in secret operations in the Arctic, the Canadian Press reports:

The Canadian Press has learned that soldiers have taken the new hybrid-electric snowmobile prototype on trial runs to evaluate features such as speed, noise level, battery endurance and acceleration.

Canada’s defense department announced it would not spend money on building its military in the far north for eight years, but that the research on the snowmobile would continue.

While Canada’s defense department says a versatile vehicle is necessary, Arctic policy experts question the neeed for silent snowmobiles.
