Authorities discovered anti-Israel graffiti on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial early Wednesday morning.

"Free Gaza," read the graffiti in red paint on the steps of the monument, accompanied by more splattered red paint. Vandals also painted slogans including "Free Palestine" and "Give land back," according to DC News Now.

Workers told the outlet that the paint was water-based so they were not worried that it would permanently stain the memorial's steps.

United States Park Police told The Hill the steps are closed to visitors and the removal process could take several days. The vandalism comes a month after anti-Israel protesters vandalized gates in front of the White House with red hand prints and wrote "Free Palestine" on a statue. That same weekend, pro-Palestinian activists defaced the D.C.-area office of an Israeli defense company.
