WWII Vet Uses Virtual Reality to Visit French Town He Helped Liberate

November 14, 2016

On June 6, 1944, British soldier Frank Mouqué took part in the Normandy invasions as he charged Sword Beach on D-Day. Three months later, on September 6, Mouqué helped liberate the French town of Armentières from the Nazis.

Mouqué just visited Armentières again by using a virtual reality headset.

The online network Twine provided Mouqué, who is now 91 years old, with the headset and played the video, Fox News reported.

Paulette Noël was 18 years old during the liberation. She appeared in the video with her younger brother, André Prevost, to thank Mouqué for his bravery and saving them from the occupying Germans.

"We owe you a lot: our liberty, and even our lives," Prevost says in the video. "And that's why you really deserve your Legion d'honneur."

In the next segment, a group of schoolchildren sing the nursery rhyme "Mademoiselle from Armentières." The song dates back to World War I and was known among many soldiers from both wars.

The video then takes Mouqué to the Armentières mayor's office. Mayor Bernard Haesebroeck walks to the camera from behind his desk to speak to Mouqué.

"I am very happy, and very moved, to be in front of you today," Haesebroeck says. "Your face represents all those who, on the 6th of September 1944, entered the town of Armentières in order to liberate it."

"Through your eyes, and through who you are today, we see a symbol of freedom," Haesebroeck continues.

Haesebroeck then holds up a small case for Mouqué to see.

"Now, today Frank, with honor, I would like to present you with this," Haesebroeck says. "This is the medal of the town of Armentières; The one that we save for those people, those men and women, who have, because of their courage, their actions, and their bravery, brought freedom to Armentières, but also for the great service you have rendered us, and Frank, you deserve this."

"I am very pleased to present you with this medal of the town of Armentières. Bravo Frank, and I wish you a long and happy life. Thank you very much."

After Mouqué's headset is removed, he remains in his chair, stunned.

"Fantastic!" Mouqué exclaims.

One of the producers of the video then hands Mouqué the medal that the mayor had awarded him in the video.

"I'm honored on behalf of all of us who were there," Mouqué responds. "I mean, I'm 91. There's still hundreds of us alive, but we're a diminishing breed, aren't we?"

Mouqué then talks to the camera in a message to the people of Armentières and thanks them for the medal.

"On behalf of all the people who were with me, they would say 'Thank you' too," Mouqué says.

Twine also provided the video of what Mouqué saw on his virtual reality headset.
