State Department spokesman Mark Toner called Hillary Clinton's email scandal a "learning experience" during his briefing Thursday, The Hill reports.
The Office of the Inspector General for the State Department released a brutal report Wednesday over Clinton's use of her private email server for official business while she was Secretary of State. The report goes against the talking points her campaigns has used so far, especially Clinton's consistent claim that her server was permissible.
A reporter asked Toner what, in his opinion, was so revealing about the Inspector General's report.
"What is so profoundly and fundamentally new, that is really earthshaking?" a reporter asked.
"Well, look, it's a fair question. You know, I think, under Secretary (John) Kerry, let's be clear, did ask the Inspector General to look at our records management, specifically the use of non-official email and to see, really do forensics on what went wrong and how we can do better and to make recommendations," Toner said.
"You know, I hate to say it, but it’s a learning experience. We have learned important lessons," Toner said. "We're not the only federal agency, frankly that, is also addressing these challenges, but we're trying to move forward and we're trying to address it."
