Dallas Police Chief Speaks at Memorial for Fallen Officers

July 12, 2016

Dallas Police Chief David Brown spoke during a memorial Tuesday afternoon for the five Dallas Police Officers that were shot and killed in the line of duty.

Last Friday a gunman open fired during a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, Texas. Micah Xavier, the attacker shot and killed five Dallas police officers, injured 9 other officers, and two civilians.

Chief Brown spoke alongside George W. Bush and President Obama during the memorial. Brown gave a heartfelt speech in which he quoted Steve Wonder's famous hit, "As."

Brown started by looking back on his teenage years and how difficult it was to find the right words. He recalled citing lyrics for girls he liked when he could not find the words to express his feelings.

"So for girls I liked, I would pull out some Al Green or some Teddy Pendergrass, or some Isley brothers and I'd recite the lyrics to their love songs but for people I loved, if I fell in love with a girl, oh, I had to dig down deep and get some Stevie Wonder," Brown reminisced. "To fully express the love I had for them."

In honor of the five officers who lost their lives and the love he has for their families Brown quotes Stevie Wonder.

"We all know sometimes life hates and troubles can make you wish you were born in another time and space. But you can bet you life times that and twice its double that God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed. So make sure when you say you're in it but not of it. You're not helping to make this earth a place sometimes called Hell. Change your words into truths and then change that truth into love. And maybe our children's grandchildren and their great-great grandchildren will tell, I'll be loving you"

Brown concluded, "I'll be loving you always. and there's no greater love than this. that these five men gave their lives for all of us."
