Barber: Excuse for Lost Lerner Emails 'Does Not Make Sense'

The Washington Free Beacon's Ellison Barber said the IRS' story about losing Lois Lerner's emails simply doesn't hold water Tuesday on Fox News.

While the agency, under investigation for its targeting of conservative groups, had known that the emails of Lerner were lost since February, it only disclosed the news Friday, angering Republicans who don't "buy their excuse," as Barber put it. Lerner previously headed the division charged with approving organizations seeking tax-exempt status.

"Democrats are going to continue to say they think this is an orchestrated scandal by Republicans, but I think you have a lot of people saying this is something that is concerning," Barber said. "It really does not make sense they have lost these emails because according to the Federal Records Act, federal agents are required to keep these emails and there is a specific procedure for when you have to delete them."

It seems odd they would suddenly have no record of two years of her emails, Barber said, given Lerner's important status within the IRS.
