Obama fundraising likely to fall short of $1 billion goal

February 17, 2012

Team Obama raised more than $29 million for the president’s reelection campaign and the Democratic Party, campaign officials told Politico. Ninety-eight percent of these contributions, the campaign claims, came from small donations of $250 or less.

However, Politico speculates that Obama won’t be able to run a billion dollar campaign, as he had anticipated:

That's obviously quite a bit of money, especially compared to how the Republican candidates are likely to fare as their primary continues, and the rate of Obama's fundraising is speeding up. As Glenn Thrush wrote last month, though, it doesn't necessarily live up to the expectation that the president will be running a billion-dollar campaign.
