Man Drives SUV off Cliff, Lands in Neighbors Garage

Homeowner says it was 'pretty uncool'

A California motorist drove his SUV off a cliff and into the home of an unsuspecting San Diego couple on Wednesday, prompting a police arrest of a 'person of interest' who was spotted near the scene of the accident.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the BMW SUV, a loaner from a local dealership, slammed through the garage of George and Erin Strother shortly before 12:30 a.m. early Wednesday morning, damaging two cars parked inside.

"It's really sad, they did find a cell phone in the car and they have linked it to a person on our street," Erin Strother said. "So, that's pretty uncool."

The 'person of interest' linked to the loaner vehicle and the cell phone fled the scene immediately, but was said to be hiding in the bushes after the accident. The local NBC affiliate attempted to track him down, but was unsuccessful.

"We're going to get him through his insurance, or one way or another," Erin said.

The couple was sleeping at the opposite end of their home when the SUV crashed through their garage roof. They originally thought it was an earthquake and did not realize what had happened until police began knocking on their door.

"We were looking under the floorboards for some mangled, horrible corpse," Erin said. "I'd much rather have him be gone than have him be dead."
