Shifting demographics have forced newsrooms all over the country to pay more attention to the American Southwest, or what I prefer to call "God’s Country." The increase in America's Hispanic population, for example, puts bilingual journos like KSWT’s Grecia Aguilar at a premium.
Grecia’s mad skills put her front and center in this week’s local reporter spotlight.
Grecia moved to Arizona to cover the Imperial Valley after she completed a double major in journalism and Spanish. She even went back to a community college to hone her skills as a one-man-band reporter, learning to shoot and edit film on her own.
Also did I mention she has a kick-ass press pass.
Her celebrity double: fellow bilingual superstar Jennifer Lopez.
But Grecia does pretty well on her own.
When not hunting down the latest desert landscape scoop, Grecia works out by training in mixed marital arts. Summers of 120 degrees promote investments in sweat equity.
With all that fitness and soul crushing heat, a gal has to stay hydrated!
As we press forward in reforming our broken immigration system, America needs ambitious bilingual reporters like Grecia to better serve our increasingly diversifying communities.
Keep up the good work, Grecia! And stay cool!
