President Donald Trump isn't going to attend this year's annual White House Correspondents Dinner, but he will hold a campaign rally that evening.
The rally will take place on the evening of April 28 in Washington, Michigan—just outside Detroit—while reporters who cover the White House will gather in Washington, D.C., the Hill reports.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will represent Trump while he spends the evening at the rally and skips the dinner for the second straight year. It typically features comedy routines by a featured entertainer and the president himself.
"While the fake news media will be celebrating themselves with the denizens of Washington society in the swamp that evening, President Trump will be in a completely different Washington, celebrating our national economic revival with patriotic Americans," Michael Glassner, the Trump Campaign's COO said.
Michigan was a key Rust Belt state Trump picked up in the 2016 presidential election. Trump is expected to be supporting several Republican congressional candidates over the course of 2018 to help Republicans retain control of both houses of Congress.
