The NRSC has released an ad blasting Sen. Bill Nelson's (D., Fla.) support for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election after her "backwards" remarks about President Donald Trump's voters.
She's called you ‘deplorable.’ Now, she's called you ‘backwards.’ And if Bill Nelson had his way, Hillary Clinton would be president," the ad reads while playing the associated clips of Clinton insulting voters, including her recent divisive remarks at the India Today Conclave in Mumbai, India.
The ad includes a clip of Nelson speaking a Clinton rally in Tampa, where he praised Clinton and called her a "unifier."
"Hillary will not only be commander-in-chief as president but she will be the unifier-in-chief," Nelson said at the rally.
The ad then shows Clinton, during the 2016 campaign, calling "half" of Trump supporters "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it."
Trump beat Clinton in Florida during the 2016 election, and Nelson, who has served as senator from Florida since 2001, is seen as vulnerable going into this year's midterms. He is the only Democratic statewide elected official from Florida.
The NRSC will release similar ads in a total of ten states, targeting vulnerable Democrats who are running in states that voted for Trump in 2016, Roll Call reports.
