Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D., Ill.) announced on Tuesday that she is pregnant, which will make her the first lawmaker to give birth while a U.S. senator.
The 49-year-old said she and her husband, Bryan Bowlsbey, are expecting their second child in April, the Hill reported. Duckworth gave birth to her first child in 2014, while she was serving in the House.
The ten congresswomen who gave birth while serving in Congress before her were all in the House at the time they delivered.
"I’ve had multiple [in-vitro fertilization] cycles and a miscarriage trying to conceive again, so we’re very grateful," Duckworth said.
Duckworth’s only colleague to have a child while serving in the House is Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), who had her second child while in office.
"I feel great," Duckworth said.
Duckworth served as a helicopter pilot during the Iraq War, and she lost both of her legs in combat. She was elected to her U.S. Senate seat in 2016, defeating incumbent Sen. Mark Kirk (R., Ill.).
