Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) on Wednesday praised the Senate for passing sweeping tax reform legislation, saying its provisions will spur economic growth and help American families.
"Last night, the United States Senate accomplished something really remarkable," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "After years of work, dozens of hearings, and an open process, we passed an historic overhaul of the nation's tax code."
"It will deliver real relief to families and small businesses all across our country," McConnell continued. "We passed tax reform to spur the American economy, to encourage job creation and grow economic opportunity, to bring jobs and investment home, and to put more money into the pockets of hard-working men and women that we represent."
McConnell went on to mention some of the key players in the Senate and the House of Representatives who helped move the tax bill through Congress.
The House is set to revote on the $1.5 trillion tax package on Wednesday, after passing the bill the prior day. A provisional error in procedural rules caused the chamber to schedule another vote. If the bill passes as expected, it will head to President Donald Trump's desk. Trump has said he wants to sign the bill into law before Christmas.
During his floor speech, McConnell also told the Senate that it is necessary to lift the sequestration budget caps, which Pentagon leaders have said has devastated the military's readiness.
