Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.) said during an interview on Friday that the Republican tax bill constitutes a threat to the country's national defense.
Blumenthal told CNN "New Day" host Alisyn Camerota that he expects the bill will pass, although Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) said Thursday he would vote it down if it failed to expand the child tax credit.
Like other Democrats, Blumenthal ripped the reform bill as being rushed and overly friendly to corporations and the wealthy.
"More egregiously, it creates trillions of dollars in debt for our children and our grandchildren," he said. "It threatens our national defense."
Blumenthal quote former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who said increased debt was a threat to U.S. national security.
"It undermines our ability to acquire those weapons systems and train young men and women for our military," he said.
The GOP tax plan has been the subject of vitriolic criticism from Democrats, with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) calling it "Armageddon" and the "worst bill in the history" of Congress.
