White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reiterated at a press briefing Monday that President Donald Trump is not planning to fire special counsel Robert Mueller.
ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl asked Sanders bout Trump's tweet earlier in the day accusing Hillary Clinton of corruption, and added a second question about whether the president "is going to rule out" possibly firing Mueller. Sanders first addressed the second question on Mueller and denied that his investigation is in danger.
"The president said last week—and I've said several times before—there's no intention or plan to make any changes in regards to the special counsel," Sanders said.
She added that the news about former Trump campaign officials Paul Manafort and George Papadopoulos does not change Trump’s underlying innocence.
"Today's announcement has nothing to do with the president; it has nothing to do with the president's campaign or campaign activity," Sanders said.
Sanders then said recent evidence points toward Clinton colluding with Russia.
"The real collusion scandal, as we've said several times before, has everything to do with the Clinton campaign, Fusion GPS, and Russia," she said. "There's clear evidence of the Clinton campaign colluding with Russian intelligence to spread disinformation and smear the president to influence the election."
"We've been saying from day one, there's been no evidence of Trump-Russia collusion, and nothing in the indictment today changes that at all," Sanders concluded.
