Conway: Leaking Trump's Phone Calls 'Nothing Short of a National Disgrace'

August 4, 2017

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Friday on "Fox & Friends" that leaking the phone calls "between our president and other heads of state is nothing short of a national disgrace."

Conway referenced Democratic ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.), who expressed outrage over the leaks.

"You know who agrees with that? Democratic Senator from Virginia Mark Warner," Conway said. "He said so yesterday. He said governors, senators, and indeed presidents of the United States need to have confidence. They can engage in conversation with other heads of state. They can negotiate. They can discuss issues without the threat of it being leaked."

"Fox & Friends" co-host Brian Kilmeade asked Conway whether there was a "finite number of people" who could have had access to the conversations between President Donald Trump and the leaders of Australia and Mexico, which were leaked on Thursday.

"Yes, I have said before the West Wing is a small place," Conway said. "Each of these agencies is relatively small. I think it's easier to figure out who is leaking than the leakers may realize. On this matter, I want there to be bipartisan outrage because we need people who understand this imperils national security."

Conway said that new White House chief of staff John Kelly was cracking down on leaks, and that the administration was further dealing with the issue by the Department of Justice announcing an investigation into leakers.
