New White House chief of staff John Kelly almost resigned over former FBI Director James Comey's firing.

Kelly, who was sworn in as Trump's chief of staff on Monday, was so upset by how the president handled the firing of Comey that he called the former FBI director to tell him he was considering resigning, two sources revealed to CNN.

"John was angry and hurt by what he saw and the way [Comey] was treated," a source said.

The sources said, however, that it was unclear how serious Kelly was about resigning. Comey and Kelly are not close friends, but the two had a strong mutual respect for each other.

Comey took the call while traveling from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., and told Kelly not to resign.

Comey was fired on May 9. He learned of his dismissal from a television while speaking to law enforcement at the Los Angeles FBI Office. Comey made a joke about the situations during his speech and later called his office to confirm the news.

Trump nominated Christopher Wray to replace Comey as FBI director. His nomination is expected to pass the Senate after clearing the Judiciary Committee with unanimous support.
