Former White House chief of staff and New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu said Monday on CNN that the White House should be notified if President Donald Trump is under investigation.
Sununu broke down what he believed Trump's attorney, Jay Sekulow, was trying to communicate during his "Face the Nation" appearance Sunday on CBS.
"I think what you're hearing from Sekulow is that the White House hasn't been notified that the president is being personally investigated," Sununu said. "If the president is being investigated for obstruction of justice then the White House should have been officially notified."
Sununu explained that what bothered him the most about the investigation thus far was that special counsel Robert Mueller hired such "blatantly bias lawyers, pro-Democrat lawyers." But he believes there is a reason for it.
"Now Mueller must have some idea in mind, and if I put the best gloss on that that I could possibly do, is that maybe Mueller has decided internally this [investigation] isn't going anywhere," Sununu said. "And the only way he can have credibility on a decision saying 'nothing's there' is to have that decision come from a group of lawyers that are so blatantly biased against the president."
CNN host Alisyn Camerota asked why Sununu believed these lawyers were so biased. Sununu mentioned that the lawyers contributed to Democratic candidates and one in particular had a "strange perception of what obstruction of justice is." He also made sure to not question their abilities to hear over the case.
"I'm not arguing that these folks can't come to a constructive decision. I'm just surprised that [Mueller] didn't take [the bias] into account when he was building the team," Sununu said.
