Bush Daughters Read Heartwarming Letter on Advice for Obama Daughters

January 13, 2017

Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush appeared Friday on NBC's "Today" to read a letter they wrote to Sasha and Malia Obama reflecting on their time in the White House.

The daughters of former President George W. Bush also offered advice to the two teenage girls about how to deal with their new post-White House life.

"My sister Barbara and I know the true privilege of calling the White House home," Bush Hager said. "Eight years ago, we wrote a letter to Sasha and Malia, and now we wrote a new one to let them know how proud we are."

With images of the 2008 inauguration playing on screen, Barbara Bush started reading their letter.

"Eight years ago, on a cold November day, we greeted you on the steps of the White house. We saw the light and the wariness in your eyes as you gazed at your new home," she read.

Their letter praised the two young women for all they have experienced in their eight years in the White House.

"You attended state dinners, hiked in national parks, met international leaders, and managed to laugh at your dad's jokes during the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon. All while being kids, attending school, and making friends," Bush Hager said.

The Bush daughters then offered their advice on how the Obama daughters should approach their new lives outside after their father leaves office.

"Enjoy college, as most of the world knows, we did," Barbara Bush said. "You won't have the weight of the world on your young shoulders anymore. Explore your passions, learn who you are, make mistakes. You're allowed to. Continue to surround yourself with loyal friends who know you, adore you, and will fiercely protect you."

"Take all that you have seen, the people you have met, the lessons you have learned, and let those help guide you in making positive change," Bush Hager said. She then encouraged Sasha and Malia to cherish all the amazing opportunities they have had to travel the world and meet individuals of all different cultures.

After the video played, Jenna Bush Hager appeared to have teared up reflecting on how fast eight years in the White House can go by and how much the two Obama daughters have grown up in that time.
