Former President George W. Bush announced on Monday night that he and his wife Laura Bush adopted a puppy from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas.
The 43rd president made the announcement in a Facebook post, which included a picture of the former first couple holding the puppy they named Freddy Bush.
"Laura W. Bush and I are thrilled to introduce the newest member of our family, Freddy Bush," the Facebook post read. "We visited the SPCA of Texas' Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center last Tuesday to thank them for their great work–and came home with a puppy. We already love him, and even our cats Bob and Bernadette are finding Freddy's charm futile to resist. If you could use a little extra joy in your life, consider adopting a pet from an animal shelter or rescue group."
The Bushes have been advocates for and lovers of dogs for years, including their famous Scottish Terrier, Barney Bush, CNN reported.
Barney Bush was the famous Scottish Terrier who was at the White House during Bush's administration. The pup even had his own White House website and was often referred to as "First Dog" while Bush was in office.
Barney died at age 12 in 2013, after Bush left the White House. Miss Beazley, the Bush's other Scottish Terrier, died in 2014 at age nine.
