The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza told MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchell on Thursday that many voters are looking for an alternative candidate to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Mitchell noted that Clinton’s lead has been narrowing in the head-to-head presidential polls over the last couple weeks, adding that Clinton’s unfavorable ratings have been increasing.
Cillizza agreed with Mitchell’s points on Clinton.
"You are right. I think a little of that is to be expected, Andrea," Cillizza said. "I don’t think anyone thought she was going to win the election by 14 points nationally, which anything in double digits–which a lot of polling post-convention showed, her convention bounce clearly has worn off."
Cillizza then said the United States is deeply polarized and divided over the presidential candidates.
"[Clinton] is not terribly well liked and certainly not trusted. Many people continue to look for a reason to vote for someone other than her," Cillizza said. "Donald Trump I just think continues to struggle to give them one."
A Rasmussen survey released Thursday showed Trump leading Clinton nationally for the first time since mid-July.
