Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday that it is important for official government business to be done on official government email accounts.
Committee member Rep. Trey Gowdy (R., S.C.) said that there appears to be a two-tier justice system in the United States, referencing the controversial decision by the Justice Department not to indict Hillary Clinton for her private email server at the State Department, while past similar cases have led to criminal charges.
"It frankly should not matter whether you are running for president or running late to a kid’s ball game," Gowdy said. "The same rules ought to apply to everyone."
Gowdy followed his statement by asking Lynch why it is important to use official email accounts for official business.
"I believe it’s important to do that," Lynch said. "I think that certainly every department has chosen to craft the way in which they carry out their business and it provides for a way of doing business in a secure system."
Gowdy then asked Lynch if she uses an official email account to conduct her official business. Lynch said that she does use her official email account for government purposes.
