ABC correspondent Cecilia Vega remarked Hillary Clinton still has a "big" trust problem to overcome with voters during a report Monday on the Democratic primary race.
Clinton came back from a bruising loss to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) in New Hampshire to edge him in Nevada, and polls show her with a commanding lead in South Carolina. However, Clinton's well-established troubles with honesty are still hurting her with the electorate.
Sanders won more than 80 percent of voters in Nevada who said honesty was the most important trait in their preferred candidate.
Clinton was pressed on her honesty problems by CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday, and she said she understood voters had questions. Clinton's slipperiness regarding her private email server as secretary of state and the ensuing federal investigation has fueled the public's negative perception of her trustworthiness.
"Despite that big Vegas-style win, Clinton conceding overnight she has a big problem to overcome: trust," Vega said.
Clinton had a cringeworthy moment last week during an interview with CBS anchor Scott Pelley when she said she'd "always tried" to tell the truth to the American people:
Appearing a bit puzzled, Pelley pushed Clinton on the question, saying, "Some people are going to call that wiggle room that you just gave yourself. ‘Always tried to.’ Jimmy Carter said, ‘I will never lie to you.’"
"No, I’ve always tried to," Clinton said again, appearing flustered. "You know, you’re asking me to say have I ever. I don’t believe I ever have. I don’t believe I ever have. I don’t believe I ever will. I’m going to do the best I can to level with the American people."
