Hillary Clinton has struggled to win over female voters in New Hampshire and trails her competitor for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), among this demographic.

Sanders currently leads Clinton among female likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire by five percentage points, according to a University of Massachusetts Lowell/7 News poll released Monday, one day before the Democratic primary there.

Fifty-one percent of female Democrats in the state support Sanders, while 46 percent back Clinton; only one percent remains undecided. Among all likely primary voters, Sanders bests Clinton by 16 points, the survey shows.

The new poll numbers come days after former secretary of state Madeleine Albright and feminist writer Gloria Steinem received pushback for scolding young female voters who support Sanders. The Vermont senator leads Clinton among most demographics, receiving the most dramatic support among younger voters.

Nearly 8 in 10 New Hampshire Democratic voters under the age of 29 back Sanders over Clinton.

With Sanders remaining steadily ahead of Clinton in the state, a group of female Democratic senators bused to New Hampshire over the weekend to stump for the former secretary of state. Clinton has also deployed her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to appeal to voters in New Hampshire ahead of the primary.

On Sunday, the former president took a harder approach to criticizing Sanders, accusing his supporters of launching "sexist" and "profane" attacks against his wife and her backers.
